Shedding season is here - is your horseโ€™s skin healthy?

25 Mar 2026

As your horse starts to shed their winter coat, itโ€™s a great time to take a closer look at their skin health.
Shedding is completely natural, but it can reveal (or hide!) underlying issues. As all that hair comes out, keep an eye out for:
๐Ÿ” Scurf, dandruff or flaky skin
๐Ÿ” Bald patches or rubbing
๐Ÿ” Signs of lice or mites
๐Ÿ” Rain scald or lingering mud fever
Regular grooming is key this time of year - not just to speed up shedding, but to stimulate circulation and check for any problems early.
Top tips for healthy skin this spring:
โœ” Groom daily to remove dead hair and dirt
โœ” Clean and disinfect brushes regularly
โœ” Ensure a balanced diet with essential vitamins & minerals
โœ” Donโ€™t forget parasite control - external and internal
โœ” Check rugs are clean, well-fitting, and not causing rubs
If your horse is struggling to shed, or you notice skin issues that arenโ€™t improving, it could be a sign of an underlying problem and is worth getting checked.
