Is Winter Over Yet?

11 Feb 2026

It might not feel like it right now - the mud is still clinging to everything, the rugs are very much staying on, and the cold mornings seem never-ending. But despite what the weather is telling us… spring really is just around the corner.
This in-between period can be a tricky one for us horse owners. The days are getting longer, but the ground is still wet, temperatures fluctuate wildly, and routines start to shift. It’s often during this transition that we see a few common issues.
Weight & Condition Checks
Has your horse come out of winter leaner than expected, or holding onto extra weight? Now is the ideal time to reassess body condition and feeding plans before workload increases.
Skin & Mud-Related Problems
Persistent wet conditions can keep mud fever and other skin conditions ticking along. Regular checks and appropriate care go a long way.
The Spring Grass Flush
Even before it feels warm, grass can begin to grow - and that means rising sugar levels. For good doers and native types, it’s time to start thinking ahead about grazing management to reduce the risk of laminitis.
Routine Care Check
Coming into spring is a great time to check vaccinations, dental appointments, worming plans and general health checks are up to date - especially for those with competitions and events on the horizon.
It may not feel like winter is done with us just yet, and I’m sure it isn’t! but, brighter evenings and drier days are on their way. A little preparation now can make all the difference as we head into the new season.
If you’d like advice or have any concerns about your horse as we (slowly!) move towards spring, we are always happy to help. Roll on sunshine and dry fields!
