Equine Flu

21 Apr 2026

Please be vigilant – we have seen positive cases of equine flu in our area.
There’s been a rise in cases of equine influenza across the UK, so it’s a good time to stay vigilant. Equine flu is highly contagious and airborne, meaning it can spread over surprisingly long distances - even without direct horse-to-horse contact.
Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of your horse becoming seriously ill or spreading the virus, so make sure your horse’s vaccinations are up to date. Keep an eye out for symptoms such as a high temperature, coughing, nasal discharge, dullness, or loss of appetite, and contact your vet if you have any concerns.
It’s also worth remembering that other infectious diseases such as strangles are circulating too. Simple steps can make a big difference - avoid stroking other people’s horses and then handling your own, don’t share equipment or water sources, wash your hands regularly, and be mindful of biosecurity when visiting friends and moving between yards.
