Equine Flu – Our Current Recommendations – Please Stay Vigilant

02 Jun 2026

With the current Equine Influenza outbreak and the high movement of horses in our area due to fairs, shows and sales, now is the time to review your horse's risk.
Many owners are surprised to learn that Equine Flu can travel much further than direct horse-to-horse contact. Under the right conditions, the virus can spread through the air for up to 1 mile.
We would particularly recommend taking extra precautions if:
  • You live within 1 mile of a confirmed outbreak.
  • Your horses are kept close to busy transport routes used by horse drawn vehicles, horseboxes and trailers.
  • You regularly attend events, sales, shows or training venues.

Check vaccinations

Ensure your horse's flu vaccination is up to date. During periods of increased risk, we recommend vaccinations are no more than 6 months old where possible.

Monitor temperatures

Take your horse's temperature every 24 hours, especially before attending events or travelling. A normal temperature is typically between 37.0°C and 38.0°C.
Do not move your horse if their temperature is above 38°C
A raised temperature is often one of the earliest signs of infection, even before coughing or nasal discharge develops.

Maintain good biosecurity

  • Avoid unnecessary horse movements.
  • Wash hands and change clothing after contact with unfamiliar horses.
  • Disinfect equipment, vehicles and shared areas regularly.
  • Avoid sharing buckets, grooming kits and tack.
If your horse develops a fever, cough, nasal discharge, or you have any concerns about possible exposure to Equine Flu, please contact the practice for advice.
Working together and acting early is the best way to help limit the spread of disease and protect our local horse population.
