Are you, and your horse ready to travel?

Copy Of Horsehealth Plan (4)
With show season getting into full swing, it’s time to make sure both you and your horse are ready to travel; safely. Here are a few key things to check:
Pre-travel health check
Make sure your horse is fit to travel - no signs of illness, up-to-date vaccinations, and comfortable in their body (no new lameness or stiffness).
Vehicle safety
Ensure your trailer or horsebox is roadworthy and up to date with servicing and safety checks. Tyres, brakes, flooring, lights - all worth checking before you set off.
Loading practice
Your horse should load calmly and reload without stress at the end of the day. If loading can be tricky, it’s worth practising at home before event day to avoid unnecessary pressure.
Reduce stress during transport
Travel can be tiring and stressful (for both you and your horse!). Allow plenty of time, avoid rushing, and ensure good ventilation in the trailer or lorry. If your horse is a nervous traveller, consider doing a few short practice trips first.
Colic prevention on the move
Changes in routine + travel = increased colic risk.
  • Offer hay during travel
  • Make sure they’re well hydrated before you set off
  • Plan stops on longer journeys
Don’t forget your travel first aid kit
A few essentials to pack:
  • Bandages & padding
  • Thermometer
  • Barrier cream
  • Electrolytes
  • Your vet’s number saved in your phone
A little preparation goes a long way. If you’re unsure whether your horse is fit to travel or compete, get in touch - we’re always happy to help. 0808 168 5580
